BRIAN CONLON

Growing up in Greenwich, Connecticut, I spent a lot of time learning and developing a passion for the game of golf. Being surrounded by some of the best golf courses in the world, I was able to find an appreciation for the subtle intricacies that separate the good courses from the great. It wasn’t until I started my first golf course maintenance job at The Apawamis Club, however, that I realized my true passion was on the maintenance side of the golf course. I spent my next summer working at Greenwich Country Club before applying to the Turfgrass and Soil Science Management program at The University of Connecticut.

During my studies at UConn, I spent a couple more seasons working at Greenwich Country Club and then completed my internship at The Stanwich Club. After graduating, I had a second assistant superintendent job waiting for me at Greenwich Country Club. There, not only did my passion for golf course management flourish, but I had to quickly develop a strategy for managing people. I expected every detail to be perfected and now I had to motivate my crew to want the same.

I spent one season at GCC before moving to Nantucket to work for Nantucket Golf Management. NGM inc. is responsible for the maintenance of Miacomet Golf Club, an 18 hole semi-private club, and Siasconset Golf Club, a 9 hole public course 10 miles down the road. My first year there, Miacomet went from being unranked to the number two public golf course in Massachusetts. We were all extremely proud and were determined to not fall back in the rankings.

Before starting my new position at Burning Tree Country Club, I spent one winter at El Dorado Golf and Beach Club in Los Cabos, Mexico. Our members at El Dorado expected world class conditions on a daily basis and were notorious for wanting the fastest greens in the world. This was a great experience to raise my personal standards and expectations on the golf course.

My time at Burning Tree exposed me to every aspect of the golf course superintendent role such as payroll, budgeting, crew leadership, and agronomic plans. I gained experience working with architects, contractors, vendors, and also completing in house projects in order to complete the full course renovation. Being a part of all of the changes at Burning Tree was invaluable for my career.

After Miacomet Golf Club was chosen to co-host the 2021 Mid-Amateur I decided to return as the Assistant Superintendent early 2020. We spent two seasons preparing and I feel that we exceeded expectations with the playing conditions we provided.

Outside of work you can find me with my wife, Meghan, our daughter, Catherine, and our dog, Tug, hiking trails or walking the beach. Living on Nantucket gives so many opportunities to spend time in the outdoors and I do my best to take advantage of every minute I have living here.
